In the flood of commentary surrounding the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I found but one reference to a related anniversary of considerable importance: the fifth anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg Lecture. That lecture, given the day after the fifth anniversary of 9/11 at the pope's old university in Germany, identified the two key challenges to 21st-century Islam, if that faith of over a billion people is going to live within today's world in something other than a condition of war. . . . Continue Reading »

High Fashion in the Church?

If you want to make some people's blood pressure go through the roof, it seems all you have to do is show them a picture of Raymond Cardinal Burke in a cappa magna.

For those of you who are not familiar with this rather large and cumbersome piece of ecclesiastical haberdashery, it is a very ample choir cape with a long train.

The train part, which is usually carried by a cleric, was fifteen feet long, until Pius XII shortened it to a more manageable seven feet. Interestingly enough, Blessed John XXIII, the same Pope the soi-disant progressives invoke as the prophet who sang a new church into being, lengthened it back to fifteen meters.....  http://www.chantcafe.com/2011/09/high-fashion-in-church.html

GetReligion/bailey Whispering with Rocco Palmo

We usually examine mainstream media reporting here, but we also have our eyes set on non-mainstream sites that cover religion. Earlier this month, tmatt highlighted a piece from the Baltimore Sun on Rocco Palmo who runs Whispers in the Loggia, which regularly scoops mainstream press.

A former US correspondent for the London-based international Catholic weekly The Tablet, Palmo has served as a church analyst for many mainstream outlets since he launched the blog in 2004. A native of Philadelphia, he studied political science at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2010, Palmo received an honorary doctorate from Aquinas Institute of Theology, a Dominican school in St Louis, for services to the church's interaction with technology. In April he was named as one of two chairs of the Vatican's first conference on the blogosphere/social media. Get ready for an epic twist on 5Q+1 with Palmo, especially a bit of hopefulness in the bonus question......

Bishops Speak Out Against HHS Mandate and Urge Faithful to Do Likewise As Deadline Looms

(CNA/EWTN News)—Catholics across the U.S. are mobilizing against a proposed Health and Human Services mandate that requires health insurance to cover contraception and provides a narrow exemption for religious groups.

Congress investigating Planned Parenthood over sex abuse cover-up allegations

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 27, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - According to a letter leaked this morning, the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce has launched an investigation into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America to determine whether the abortion organization handles criminal conduct properly, or has mishandled federal funding to pay for abortions.

A letter to Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards leaked to Washington Post reporter Sarah Kliff shows Commerce Chairman Rep. Cliff Stearns telling the group to hand over official documentation that "ensures federal money received by PPFA and its affiliates is not being used to impermissibly subsidize abortion," as well as "all official written policies and procedures" proving that PPFA segregates the funds in practice......

From the time of Adam and Eve until the late 1970s, there was—with one notable exception—only one way to make a baby: the sexual bonding of a man and a woman. That number increased to two in 1978 after the birth of Louise Brown, the first "test tube baby." Today, there are thirty-eight ways to make a baby, almost all of which can be accomplished without sexual intercourse.  . . . Continue Reading »

It amazes me how an embryo is or isn't an existing human life–depending on what the question is regarding the embryo being discussed.

In Argentina, a man fathered embryos via IVF, and then divorced.

His ex wants to be implanted with the embryos, but he says that would be forcing him into unwanted fatherhood.

The court ruled in favor of the ex wife.  From the AP Story:

Definitions matter.

That point hit me hard as I read an article that wants doctors to be given the right to stop treatment from a man diagnosed to be in a persistent unconscious condition.  From "When Family and Doctors Disagree on When to End life."

Hold on: Bad title! Doctors shouldn't "end life."  They can ethically withdraw treatment in some circumstances, which can result in death.  But that isn't the same thing.

Where were we?  Oh, yes: From the column by Hilary Young in The Star:

"Get out of the lifeboat you expensive terminal cancer patients!

Sure, your lives could be extended months, maybe even years,–but it isn't worth the money!  You're going to die sooner or later, so it might as well be sooner.  We need the money for more important and productive patients."

That, in a harshly stated nutshell, is the recommendation of a committee of doctors in Lancet Oncology who recommend money by rationing therapies that don't save the lives of cancer patients, but can extend their lives.

New Project Defends Those Who Defend Marriage

The National Organization for Marriage has launched the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance to support the freedom to express one's belief that marriage should be the union of a man and woman without fear of harassment or punishment.

The alliance recently released a video on Frank Turek, a leadership seminar speaker who lost his contract with Cisco and Bank of America after human-relations employees discovered that he had written a book that argued marriage should not be redefined.

In response, the alliance started a consumer-complaint campaign directed towards Bank of America in the state of North Carolina, where the company's headquarters is located.

"We reached out to a small number of customers of Bank of America in the Charlotte area, told them what happened to Frank Turek, and asked them to call the company to let bankers know their customers do not appreciate this kind of disrespect," said Gallagher.
