From Jeff Mirus: Don't miss our story on the Vatican's message to the world's Hindus. In the past, the annual Vatican messages of greeting to different religious groups were generally uncontroversial—if not downright boring. But this message is not just another "vanilla" statement; it packs a punch, with an unmistakable challenge to Hindus. This, I think, is in line with Pope Benedict's approach, making real demands on our partners in inter-religious dialogue.

GetReligion/bobby: Finn and the Facebook foes

From Jeff Mirus:
  • A Missouri prosecutor says that it was a "tough decision" to pursue indictment of Bishop Robert Finn, yet claims that some people wanted a felony indictment. Forgive me if I sound cynical, but if indictment for a misdemeanor was a close call, why would a prosecutor even speak about a more ambitious felony charge—unless she wanted to score a few more publicity points? Sorry, but you can't have it both ways. Either the misdemeanor indictment is a slam-dunk, and the bishop is lucky he's not facing felony charges; or the prosecutor is a showing her spunk by pursuing any charge at all. One or the other. Not both.

Bob Hope — "the most honored entertainer" ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, for his achievements in theater, radio, film, TV, philanthropy and business, and an extraordinary record of service to country, with 199 USO shows around the globe — won the biggest prize of all in the waning days of his life when he converted to Catholicism.

Less is not more, especially when it comes to Mass           By Mary DeTurris Poust

A couple of weeks ago, I experienced something at Mass that I'd never seen or heard before in my almost half-century of life as a Catholic.

My family was sitting up in the second or third row, our usual spot in our very large suburban parish. Starting at the Eucharistic prayer and lasting through the Sign of Peace, a baby somewhere toward the back half of the church was screaming. I'm not talking fussing and cooing or even an occasional bout of serious crying. I'm talking full-out, top-of-his-lungs, screaming bloody murder.

I'm not sure how the priest was even able to concentrate on the words he was saying. Well, actually, he obviously wasn't able to concentrate, and that's where things get interesting..... http://www.osvdailytake.com/2011/10/less-is-not-more-especially-when-it.html

Fairfield Students Bussed to Hear Gay Advocate Bash the Church

Chile: Denouncing Eco-Feminist Theology

From the ashes of Liberation Theology, a new, more profound and broader revolution has been born: eco-feminist theology. This new theology is the subject of a 200-page book titled, From Liberation Theology to the New Eco-feminist Theology. It is written by Juan Antonio Montes Varas and was just published by Chile's Acción Familia organization.

This new theology joins together the Marxist concept of the "oppressed" with radical feminist demands and the so-called "deep ecology." According to this doctrine, women should "raise their awareness" of the abuse they have suffered because of the subordination that Christianity imposed on them, and as a consequence, they should see abortion and homosexual relations as part and parcel of the "rights" they must advocate.

The eco-feminist theological current is not confined to a small group of visionary nuns; it is a powerful Church current that proposes a new way of understanding the universe, religion and even God himself. It is born from a long entrenched process in the Church which further radicalizes the Marxist egalitarian tenets of some currents of liberation theology.

Spain: The Spanish case is shocking: but we cruelly remove children from 'undesirable' families too

If we are going to adopt morally superior attitudes, we had better be sure we are actually morally superior

By William Oddie

,,,,,Few Catholics in this country today can be found to defend the Franco regime (and I certainly don't intend to). But in the thirties, it was very different. When I was editor of this newspaper, I ran a regular column with extracts from the Herald from some decades before. This involved going back to the thirties and forties: and I was astonished as well as shocked to discover that the Herald firmly and consistently supported the Franco regime.... http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/commentandblogs/2011/10/19/the-spanish-case-is-shocking-but-we-cruelly-remove-children-from-'undesirable'-families-too/

An abortion/medical conscience controversy is riling the decidedly pro choice state of Washington, presaging what I think will become one of our own most contentious bioethical controversies.

The issue involves the existence and extent of "conscience rights" for medical professionals and facilities opposed to participating in interventions that take human life.

Here's the context: Catholic Providence Health and Services has purchased a hospital, which is now refusing to perform abortions.  From Nicole Brodeur's column, "Swedish Abortion Decision: How About Respect for Patients?" published in the Seattle Times:

Pro-abortion group successfully lobbies Texas Catholic hospitals on abortifacient Plan B

.....[Seton spokeswoman Adrienne] Lallo said that Seton is in compliance with Directive 36 of the US Conference of Catholics Bishops 2009 directives for Catholic hospitals. Directive 36 says that women who are victims of sexual assault may use methods to prevent the fertilization of an ovum following rape.

"Emergency contraception can be administered to female patients who have been sexually assaulted, refused transfer for a (forensic exam) at a neighboring hospital, requested emergency contraception within 72 hours of the assault and are not pregnant, as confirmed by a pregnancy test," Lallo said.

In the year 2000, a Vatican document dealt with the "morning-after pill."

"It is clear, therefore, that the proven 'anti-implantation' action of the morning-after pill is really nothing other than a chemically induced abortion. It is neither intellectually consistent nor scientifically justifiable to say that we are not dealing with the same thing."

In 2001, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger censured a prominent Spanish theologian, Father Marciano Vidal, C.Ss.R., for claiming falsely that the "morning-after pill" and other such methods that intervene after fertilization and before implantation are not abortifacient. http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/pro-abortion-group-successfully-lobbies-texas-catholic-hospitals-on-abortif
