St. Peter's Square Will Return to the Seventeenth Century

.....The huge work foresees the restoration of all decorative and architectural elements of the square and involves 284 columns, 92 pillars, 140 statues, 6 papal coats of arms, 1200 metres of balustrades and crowning cornices and 3400 square meters of caissons constituting the covered soffits of the hemicycles.

There are also the two famous twin fountains (the Clementine and Gregorian), and of course the granite Egyptian obelisk 42 meters high, erected in 1586 by Sixtus V in the center of the square.

But even the Nineteenth-century street lamps around the obelisk will be restored with the help of Acea, Italy's main electric company, as reported by Pier Carlo Cuscianna, director of technical services of the Governorate..... http://vaticaninsider.lastampa.it/en/homepage/the-vatican/detail/articolo/roma-rome-san-pietro-saint-peters-san-pedro-vaticano-vatican-8464/

New Bishops' Committee Responds to Religious Liberty Threats: Archbishop Dolan cites six urgent challenges that have arisen in just three months.

Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, Conn., will head the new bishops ad hoc committee on religious liberty.

– CNA photo

Washington, D.C. — Seeking to fortify the Church's response to the "erosion of freedom of religion in America," the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has formed an Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty.

The new committee will be headed by Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport.

The announcement to form the committee was made Sept. 30, the same day as the deadline for comments registering concerns about the interim rules —  issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services —  which mandate that contraceptive services and surgical sterilization be included in virtually all employee health coverage.

The coincidence, whether intentional or not, signaled that the bishops possess firsthand experience with First Amendment challenges posed by a range of legislative, judicial and federal actions.....  http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/new-bishops-committee-responds-to-religious-liberty-threats/

That, as they say, is that.

When anti circumcision activists–known ludicrously (in my view) as "intactivists"–qualified an initiative to ban the circumcision of minors, we discussed it at length here at SHS

Well, that led to a big fuss, a judge booted the initiative from the ballot, and now Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill that makes such local attempts to outlaw circumcision illegal.  From the AP story:

GetReligion/mollie: Anwar al-Awlaki's many faces

Anwar al-Awlaki was reportedly killed by a U.S. drone strike on Friday morning. He was as the New York Times describes him "the American-born cleric whose fiery sermons made him a larger-than-life figure in the shadowy world of jihad."

But that is not how the New York Times always described him. It's interesting to review the coverage he received over the years and what, if anything, that can tell us about media coverage of Islam in America.

Shortly after al Qaeda launched it's attack on Americans using four hijacked airliners, media interest in Islam spiked considerably. This is understandable. One of the people that was sought after for interviews was none other than al-Awlaki. He was an American, spoke perfect English, used American idioms, and was well respected by many Muslims.

Here's a New York Times piece from October 19, 2001.....

The Stripping of the British Churches

"Church roofs are often the target, threatening some churches with bankruptcy," she said.

Poland: The people of Sokolka, Poland celebrate a possible Eucharistic miracle as scientists confirm that a consecrated host has become human heart tissue

The Sokolka Eucharist
A special Mass to celebrate a possible Eucharistic miracle was offered [Sunday, Oct. 2] in the Polish town of Sokolka (Sokółce). The celebrations marked the official scientific confirmation of the fact that a small piece of a consecrated host, which had been accidentally dropped on the floor in 2008, is now tissue from muscle belonging to a human heart.

It seems that most Poles, including the local Archbishop of Bialystok, Edward Ozorowski, have concluded that the Sacred Heart of Jesus has indeed become truly visible in this host, even if the Holy See is yet to confirm whether or not the "miracle of Sokolka" is supernatural in origin.

According to an
Associated Press report, "The communion wafer in question developed a brown spot in 2008 after falling on the floor during a Mass in the eastern Polish town of Sokolka."

The priest who had been celebrating Mass when the host was dropped on the floor later placed the it in water, so that it would dissolve naturally.

After a few days, though, a local nun discovered that the consecrated host had not completely dissolved and that the small potion remaining had become dark red in colour.....  http://areluctantsinner.blogspot.com/2011/10/people-of-sokolka-in-poland-celebrate.html

'Something Beautiful for God'

Saturday Book Pick: Malcolm Muggeridge's uncollected writings

Malcolm Muggeridge has been called the "most brilliant" journalist of the 20th century. He was deep in literature and deeply philosophical (though not formally trained in philosophy), not to say mystical.

Muggeridge disclosed Marxism's atrocities to the world with firsthand reporting in Soviet Russia, when this was still an unpopular thing to do. It is as yet unclear whether it was for this that The London Guardian and The New York Times have yet to forgive Muggeridge, or whether it was his conversion to Catholicism that did it. It couldn't be both, right?

Muggeridge was a well-known radio and television personality, documentary maker, novelist and essayist, as well as some-time editor of England's famous satirical publication Punch. He hobnobbed with the likes of P.G. Wodehouse, Somerset Maugham and the Bloomsburyman Leonard Woolf..... http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/something-beautiful-for-god/

GetReligion/tmatt/Respect Life Sunday  Separation of church and real debates

.....If the Times story is accurate, then Respect Life Sunday in thousands of Catholic parishes is illegal.

If the Times story is accurate, liberal pastors could not have preached sermons against wars in Vietnam, Iraq and elsewhere and the politicians who advocated those wars.

If the Times story is accurate, then President Barack Obama was clearly out of line in 2009 when he asked a flock of rabbis to prepare sermons on the moral and theological necessity of his health-care reform efforts......

Pre natal genetic testing has turned into a search and destroy eugenic abortion mission that targets fetuses with Down syndrome, dwarfism, and other genetic conditions.  Indeed, we know that about 90% of such nascent humans become medical waste instead of being born.

Evidence showed that "genetic counselors" pushed the abortion option, and thus the late Senator Ted Kennedy and former Senator (now KS Governor) Sam Brownback co-sponsored a law that requires neutrality in genetic counseling.

And now with a test coming that can catch Down earlier, some are worried that the eugenic enterprise will shift into high gear.

Penn bioethicist Art Caplan reminds us in a good column that parenting children with Down is often a joyful experience.  From "Down Syndrome's Rewards Touted as New Test Looms:"

In Euthanasialand–the fantasy world depicted by assisted suicide advocates–every family is loving and caring of their ill and elderly members.  In Euthanasia, no one is ever pressured to die early, either directly or indirectly, such as by being made to feel like a burden or unloved.  In Euthanasialand, every assisted suicide or lethal injection is absolutely free from coercion, abuse, and/or neglect.

Euthanasialand doesn't exist, of course.

In the real world, elder abuse is a very real and growing problem.  Indeed, a new MacArther Genius Grant Award recipient warned in Congressional testimony earlier this year, that elder abuse is a present and growing problem. Canada: National Post apologizes for pro-family ad, donates proceeds to gay activist group

September 30, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Canadian National Post, which until the advent of SUN news network was thought to be the most conservative national mainstream media outlet in the country, has shocked conservatives by apologizing for running a pro-family advertisement. Moreover, the National Post says it will be donating the thousands of dollars paid for the ad by the pro-family group to a homosexual activist group.

The ad, sponsored by the Institute for Christian Values, depicted a large picture of a little girl with the header, "Please! Don't confuse me."  Below the photo, the youngster said, "I'm a girl. Don't teach me to question if I'm a boy, transsexual, transgendered, intersexed or two spirited." The ad specifically addressed the Toronto District School Board's policy of forbidding parents to opt out of its pro-homosexual curriculum.

In its published apology, the National Post editors wrote: "The fact that we will not be publishing this ad again represents a recognition on our part that publishing it in the first place was a mistake. The National Post would like to apologize unreservedly to anyone who was offended by it. We will be taking steps to ensure that in future our procedures for vetting the content of advertising will be strictly adhered to..... http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/breaking-national-post-apologizes-for-pro-family-ad-donates-proceeds-to-gay

British MP: Ban Marriages in "Homophobic" Churches

Weatherly, a public proponent of same-sex marriage, is is a member of the Conservative Party....  http://www.thenewamerican.com/world-mainmenu-26/europe-mainmenu-35/9191-british-mp-ban-marriages-in-qhomophobicq-churches
