A Missouri prosecutor says that it was a "tough decision" to pursue indictment of Bishop Robert Finn, yet claims that some people wanted a felony indictment. Forgive me if I sound cynical, but if indictment for a misdemeanor was a close call, why would a prosecutor even speak about a more ambitious felony charge—unless she wanted to score a few more publicity points? Sorry, but you can't have it both ways. Either the misdemeanor indictment is a slam-dunk, and the bishop is lucky he's not facing felony charges; or the prosecutor is a showing her spunk by pursuing any charge at all. One or the other. Not both.

A couple of weeks ago, I experienced something at Mass that I'd never seen or heard before in my almost half-century of life as a Catholic.

My family was sitting up in the second or third row, our usual spot in our very large suburban parish. Starting at the Eucharistic prayer and lasting through the Sign of Peace, a baby somewhere toward the back half of the church was screaming. I'm not talking fussing and cooing or even an occasional bout of serious crying. I'm talking full-out, top-of-his-lungs, screaming bloody murder.

Chile: Denouncing Eco-Feminist Theology

From the ashes of Liberation Theology, a new, more profound and broader revolution has been born: eco-feminist theology. This new theology is the subject of a 200-page book titled, From Liberation Theology to the New Eco-feminist Theology. It is written by Juan Antonio Montes Varas and was just published by Chile's Acción Familia organization.

This new theology joins together the Marxist concept of the "oppressed" with radical feminist demands and the so-called "deep ecology." According to this doctrine, women should "raise their awareness" of the abuse they have suffered because of the subordination that Christianity imposed on them, and as a consequence, they should see abortion and homosexual relations as part and parcel of the "rights" they must advocate.

The eco-feminist theological current is not confined to a small group of visionary nuns; it is a powerful Church current that proposes a new way of understanding the universe, religion and even God himself. It is born from a long entrenched process in the Church which further radicalizes the Marxist egalitarian tenets of some currents of liberation theology.

Directive 36 says that women who are victims of sexual assault may use methods to prevent the fertilization of an ovum following rape.

"Emergency contraception can be administered to female patients who have been sexually assaulted, refused transfer for a (forensic exam) at a neighboring hospital, requested emergency contraception within 72 hours of the assault and are not pregnant, as confirmed by a pregnancy test," Lallo said.

In the year 2000, a Vatican document dealt with the "morning-after pill."

"It is clear, therefore, that the proven 'anti-implantation' action of the morning-after pill is really nothing other than a chemically induced abortion. It is neither intellectually consistent nor scientifically justifiable to say that we are not dealing with the same thing."

I went to a wedding in New Jersey last week and I ended up sitting at the same table as the priest who presided at the wedding. I could tell from some of Father's, ahem, liturgical stylings, that this priest and I wouldn't see eye to eye on many issues. Since I was there to wish the happy couple well and to have a little fun, I determined not to engage Father on anything more meaningful than his preference for Dewars over Johnny Walker Red.

A few weeks ago I had a liturgical experience that was memorably good. I've been hesitant to write about it – rare though such experiences are for Catholics – because it's an unfair comparison, in a way, with my home parish.

My diocese (Arlington) is solid. ("You don't know how lucky you are to live somewhere still in communion with Rome," a friend once admonished me when we were discussing his own diocese, which shall here remain nameless.)

My parish (St. Ambrose) has three quite different but very good priests, all intelligent and dedicated men who can, week after week, deliver stimulating and insightful homilies.

So the problem, such as it is, is not them, or the bishop, but – I continue to believe – the English-language liturgy itself.....

Mary Wagner used to be the girl next door — with a tomboy streak. Growing up in a home full of boys on Vancouver Island, she became a second mother to the younger ones and also learned to fix a car. At times, it looked like motherhood awaited, and at times, it looked like the convent.

Now it seems like Wagner is headed for a life behind bars.

Wagner, 38, has just been convicted of mischief and sentenced to 40 days in jail for entering a Toronto abortion business and counseling the women there to keep their babies. It's Wagner's second conviction since 2000 and her second time in jail in two years. This spring she was actually acquitted of the same offense — but not before she spent four months awaiting trial. Contraceptive Used in Africa May Double Risk of H.I.V./NYTimes

The most popular contraceptive for women in eastern and southern Africa, a hormone shot given every three months, appears to double the risk the women will become infected with H.I.V., according to a large study published Monday. And when it is used by H.I.V.-positive women, their male partners are twice as likely to become infected than if the women had used no contraception.

Legalized assisted suicide costs us the presence of good people, who had they been given emotional support to help them not commit suicide in their time of health extremis, would be so glad to be alive.

I have written frequently of my last hospice patient, Bob, who had been suicidal for 2 1/2 years after his Lou Gehrig's disease diagnosis. He told me he would have gone to Kevorkian if his family had cooperated. But they wouldn't and so he didn't–and to his delighted surprise, he ended his life so very glad to be alive to the last breath.

He would have been cheated out of all that happiness by the false compassion of assisted suicide–and the beauty part for the doctor-prescribed-death crowd is that no one would have ever known.

When anti circumcision activists–known ludicrously (in my view) as "intactivists"–qualified an initiative to ban the circumcision of minors, we discussed it at length here at SHS.

Well, that led to a big fuss, a judge booted the initiative from the ballot, and now Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill that makes such local attempts to outlaw circumcision illegal. From the AP story:

Anwar al-Awlaki was reportedly killed by a U.S. drone strike on Friday morning. He was as the New York Times describes him "the American-born cleric whose fiery sermons made him a larger-than-life figure in the shadowy world of jihad."

But that is not how the New York Times always described him. It's interesting to review the coverage he received over the years and what, if anything, that can tell us about media coverage of Islam in America.

Shortly after al Qaeda launched it's attack on Americans using four hijacked airliners, media interest in Islam spiked considerably. This is understandable. One of the people that was sought after for interviews was none other than al-Awlaki. He was an American, spoke perfect English, used American idioms, and was well respected by many Muslims.

A special Mass to celebrate a possible Eucharistic miracle was offered [Sunday, Oct. 2] in the Polish town of Sokolka (Sokółce). The celebrations marked the official scientific confirmation of the fact that a small piece of a consecrated host, which had been accidentally dropped on the floor in 2008, is now tissue from muscle belonging to a human heart.

It seems that most Poles, including the local Archbishop of Bialystok, Edward Ozorowski, have concluded that the Sacred Heart of Jesus has indeed become truly visible in this host, even if the Holy See is yet to confirm whether or not the "miracle of Sokolka" is supernatural in origin.

According to an Associated Press report, "The communion wafer in question developed a brown spot in 2008 after falling on the floor during a Mass in the eastern Polish town of Sokolka."

The priest who had been celebrating Mass when the host was dropped on the floor later placed the it in water, so that it would dissolve naturally.

Pre natal genetic testing has turned into a search and destroy eugenic abortion mission that targets fetuses with Down syndrome, dwarfism, and other genetic conditions. Indeed, we know that about 90% of such nascent humans become medical waste instead of being born.

Evidence showed that "genetic counselors" pushed the abortion option, and thus the late Senator Ted Kennedy and former Senator (now KS Governor) Sam Brownback co-sponsored a law that requires neutrality in genetic counseling.

In Euthanasialand–the fantasy world depicted by assisted suicide advocates–every family is loving and caring of their ill and elderly members. In Euthanasia, no one is ever pressured to die early, either directly or indirectly, such as by being made to feel like a burden or unloved. In Euthanasialand, every assisted suicide or lethal injection is absolutely free from coercion, abuse, and/or neglect.

Euthanasialand doesn't exist, of course.

In the real world, elder abuse is a very real and growing problem. September 30, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Canadian National Post, which until the advent of SUN news network was thought to be the most conservative national mainstream media outlet in the country, has shocked conservatives by apologizing for running a pro-family advertisement. Moreover, the National Post says it will be donating the thousands of dollars paid for the ad by the pro-family group to a homosexual activist group.

The ad, sponsored by the Institute for Christian Values, depicted a large picture of a little girl with the header, "Please! Don't confuse me." Below the photo, the youngster said, "I'm a girl. That, in a harshly stated nutshell, is the recommendation of a committee of doctors in Lancet Oncology who recommend money by rationing therapies that don't save the lives of cancer patients, but can extend their lives.

New Project Defends Those Who Defend Marriage

The National Organization for Marriage has launched the Marriage Anti-Defamation Alliance to support the freedom to express one's belief that marriage should be the union of a man and woman without fear of harassment or punishment.

The alliance recently released a video on Frank Turek, a leadership seminar speaker who lost his contract with Cisco and Bank of America after human-relations employees discovered that he had written a book that argued marriage should not be redefined.

In response, the alliance started a consumer-complaint campaign directed towards Bank of America in the state of North Carolina, where the company's headquarters is located.

"We reached out to a small number of customers of Bank of America in the Charlotte area, told them what happened to Frank Turek, and asked them to call the company to let bankers know their customers do not appreciate this kind of disrespect," said Gallagher.
